Voice Acting (My Current Experience)

I've just recently started getting into researching and understanding the business behind Voice Acting. Unsurprisingly, it's like all other talent careers where those who show up, are professional, and put their all into their craft are rewarded splendidly. However, it's a much easier industry to take advantage of. Since you can be an actor in the comfort of your home, many sites like Voices.com are quick to take your money and get you started as a Premium voice actor. You aren't allowed to even audition for roles without making an annual payment of $500. After listening to some reviews and opinions of other voice actors, it became clear that pay-2-play had a big presence online. Of course, this isn't anything new. There are tons of "talent" agencies out there who want to guarantee your success, even though they don't have much to show for it. Definitely rely on reviews when looking for a talent agency. It's all the better when they require you to audition, which means they actually  screen their talent. Which leads me to my next point:

GO TO A CLASS.

You may have talent, sure, and someone may have told you your walk is like Naomi Campbell's in NY fashion week, but still, you don't know everything. Whether it be a tutorial on youtube or a private lesson in a studio, you need to go and learn something. Your technique may be missing something vital or you may not have the technical skills to back up your talent. Having a mentor will help you cover most of what you're missing, especially when it comes to interacting with your clients and providing a quality overall business experience.

So as a novice, I think the best course of action is to approach it almost like social media:
  1. Find out what your niche is (commercials, podcasts, online work, cartoons, etc.)
  2. Do your research and LEARN something
  3. Start the grind, the earlier the better (put something out there!)
  4. Network and learn from the community that's out there (follow other voice actors)

Here are a few resources I've been vetting:
