My E3 Experience

Who's there and who's square

This year, Electronic Arts(June 8th), Microsoft, Bethesda, & Devolver Digital, Ubisoft & Square Enix (June 9th), and Nintendo (June 11th) appeared at E3 this year. Sony, however, dropped out, which truly broke my heart. However, I'm kind of glad they did, because that means they're putting all their effort into their next gen release, unlike some people (*cough* *cough* Microsoft) who are just rushing it to market.

My conference pet peeves

So conferences are already very cringy, so I can't even include that as a pet peeve. But no worries, I've got a few:
  • Long drawn out speeches with filler vocab (Microsoft revealing xbox scarlet)
  • unnecessary performances
  • games with no gameplay, but don't worry, you can pre-order now...
I think the one thing that irritated me the most in 2018's E3 Conference was that everyone kept repeating the same thing: "Gamers want their investments to matter." And all I could say was "no sh*t!" A lot of things said in conferences are super obvious, filler sentences that I honestly feel shouldn't have been said. While I understand this concert is basically a performance, there needs to be something to cut away the BS. Sure, put on your musical performances and the fancy bells and whistles, but don't waste my time. All I need is as follows:
  • Gameplay
  • Development Roadmap (If any)
  • Availability (Console)
  • Price
  • Release Date
Anything after this is fluff and only enhances the experience.

The Games

  • Death Stranding (Release November 8, 2019)
What I love about this game is that it still has people guessing. With the nasty business of MGSV left behind him, Kojima has created an opportunity to make a truly mind blowing story. Honestly, if I had to compare Kojima's games to an anime, it would be Jo-Jo's bizzare adventure. It's a unique experience where you come to love its quirks and overall compelling story. Many compare the gameplay to an "Amazon Delivery Simulator" but knowing Kojima, it will be much more than that.

  • Cyberpunk 2077(Release April 16, 2020)
Not only did we get a release date for this amazing project, but we also got a glimpse of the illustrious Keanu Reeves. While it won't have any Witcher references, we got a glimpse of how the story may unfold. It will release on all consoles, has character customization, a collector's edition, and multiple endings (gotta love those.) I am very excited for a new IP! Horizon Zero Dawn sold me on making the Leap of Faith and I'm ready to do it again with Projekt Red.

However, these games did not make a return to E3, and a couple piqued my interest.
  • Beyond good and evil 2
  • Metroid prime 4
  • The Last of Us 2
BGE2 at least has a roadmap and a community with a pulse, so I have no real concerns there. However, Metroid Prime 4 seems to have fallen off the map. I would hate to see such a gem fall into development hell...

Here are all of the other games that I'll be watching for this year:

Nintendo

  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Microsoft

  • Halo Infinite
  • Blair Witch

EA

  • Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
  • Sims 4: Island Living (Mermaids!)

Bethesda

  • Deathloop (no gameplay)
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo
  • Wolfenstein: Youngblood
  • The Elder Scrolls: Blades

Others

  • Watch Dogs Legion (Ubisoft)
  • Elden Ring(FromSoftware)
  • Dyling Light 2(TechLand)
